Twitter Size and Action Limits and Standards

Twitter, like other social media platforms, has imposed the standards, specifications, and limits for account setup and operations. The standards and specifications are to advocate the best practice in Twitter activities. Limits are needed to alleviate some of the strain on the behind-the-scenes part of Twitter and reduce downtime and error pages.

Text Length Limits

Username (Handle): 15 char.
Display Name: 50 char.
Bio: 160 char.
Post: 280 char. (increased from 140 char in Sept 2017)

The post 280-char count includes hashtags and URLs. The URL is wrapped to 23-char shortened URL. Thus, if you include a URL in tweet, it will take 23 chars no matter how long it is.

Activity (Technical) Limits

Direct Messages: 1,000 messages sent per day.
Following: 1,000 per day
Following total: 5,000 per account. Once an account is following 5,000 other accounts, additional follow attempts are limited by account-specific ratios.
Changes to account email: 4 per hour.
